Sometimes all we need is a vacation.
A few days without an alarm clock, a book by the pool, good food and, above all, time when no one needs anything from us.
But sometimes we return from even the best vacation and tell ourselves, “It was amazing, but I still feel exactly the same.”
The difference between a vacation and a retreat
That, to me, is where the difference between a vacation and a retreat lies.
A vacation is mainly meant to give us a break from routine. A retreat gives us an opportunity to stop within it and spend time somewhere a little different, with movement, meaningful content, time for ourselves and people who arrive with a similar intention.
If you are simply tired and want to rest, a vacation may be exactly what you need. But if your mind feels crowded, you are running from task to task and you need some distance to understand what you truly want, a retreat may suit you better.
Connections a vacation does not always offer
If you want to meet new people, a retreat also offers something an ordinary vacation does not always provide. You arrive among people you have never met, and within a few days very special connections begin to form. There is no shared history and no fixed roles, only the experience you are having together.
And if you are thinking, “But I don’t know anyone,” that is exactly when I would tell you not to wait.
Many women arrive alone and later discover that it was one of the greatest gifts they ever gave themselves.
So how do you know what is right for you?
Ask yourself whether you mainly need to rest or whether you feel you need to stop. If you want complete quiet, a vacation will probably do the job. If you also want an experience, movement, people and an opportunity to reconnect with yourself, a retreat may be exactly that.
There is no right or wrong answer. A retreat is not “better” than a vacation; it simply offers something different.
Before you book your next vacation, it may be worth asking yourself one simple question:
What do I truly need right now?
Sometimes the answer will be the sea, a book and quiet.
And sometimes the answer will be a few days in which someone else holds the structure, so you can finally simply be.
In the end, the right getaway is not the one that looks best in photos. It is the one that gives you exactly what you need right now.
