Why Going to a Retreat Alone Might Be the Best Thing You Can Do for Yourself

It is natural to worry about arriving alone, but that choice can create room for yourself, new connections, and an experience you might not find any other way.

“But I don’t know anyone…”

That is probably one of the most common reasons I hear from women who are unsure about coming to a retreat alone. The fear is completely understandable. We are used to taking vacations with friends, traveling with a partner, or waiting until someone else is free on exactly the same dates.

But after producing and accompanying retreats, you begin to understand just how wonderful arriving alone can be.

Arrive alone and be there for yourself

When you arrive alone, you do not need to adapt yourself to anyone else. You can choose your own pace, meet new people, take part in what feels right for you and, above all, be there for yourself.

A retreat is also a very special place to meet people. Everyone arrives with a similar intention: to step away from routine for a moment, breathe, move, rest and connect. A shared meal, a morning class or even a short conversation by the pool can quickly become a real connection.

In my experience, the women who arrive alone are often the ones who open up the fastest.

A place where you can simply be yourself

There is something freeing about arriving somewhere no one knows you. You are not “someone’s friend,” “someone’s mother,” the manager or the employee. You are simply you.

That may be one of the most beautiful things about a retreat: it gives you a few days in which you are allowed to listen to yourself.

Of course, for that to happen, the retreat must be built in a way that lets someone arrive alone and still feel comfortable. The experience begins long before the destination: in the communication, the group, the schedule and the way participants are brought together.

Maybe it is time to stop waiting

If there is a retreat you truly want to join, but you are waiting for someone to come with you, maybe it is time to stop waiting.

Sometimes deciding to arrive alone is exactly the decision to do something for yourself.

You may arrive alone, but you will probably discover very quickly that you are not alone anymore. Along the way, you may even meet friends for life.

Sometimes all it takes is giving yourself the courage to show up.
